This is an interesting tomesode, as it features two mythical creatures common in Shinto shrines and many Buddhist temples throughout Japan, and much of Asia - lion dogs, as they're known in English. ("Komainu" in Japanese. "Koma" effectively means "from Korea," and "inu" means "dog.")
